Why UK road signs stayed in miles after Britain's 1965 metrication push, and how to convert kilometres to miles accurately.

A metrication programme that stalled at the kerb

Britain announced it was going metric in 1965 — not through a single dramatic law, but a government-endorsed, industry-led programme, prompted by manufacturers who wanted a single measurement system to trade with an increasingly metric Europe. Over the following two decades it worked: construction, manufacturing, and most retail packaging shifted to metric units, and by the 1990s milk, beer, and precious metals were among the few carve-outs left where imperial units still had legal standing. Road distance was meant to be part of the same programme. It never got there. The law that keeps miles on the signs

Road signage is not simply a habit — it is a legal requirement. The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions, the statutory instrument that governs the design, wording and units of every sign a local authority is permitted to erect, specifies miles and miles per hour for distance and speed. A council cannot legally put up a kilometre-only distance sign even if it wanted to; changing the unit would need new national regulations, not a local decision. Governments have periodically looked at switching and backed away, largely on cost: replacing every distance and speed sign on the UK's road network, plus every vehicle speedometer manufactured for the domestic market, has repeatedly been costed in the hundreds of millions of pounds, with no safety case strong enough to justify it against that bill. The result is a permanent asymmetry: cross the Channel and every sign switches units at the border, while the road itself does not change at all.

Why the conversion factor is such an awkward number

Unlike a stone or a UK gallon, the modern mile was never redefined to round metric terms — it was pinned to the metre exactly as it already stood. Under the 1959 international yard and pound agreement, the mile was fixed at precisely 1.609344 km, a figure chosen to match the mile as it was already used, not to produce a tidy ratio. That single decision is why every UK-to-Europe distance comparison carries a permanently ugly multiplier: there is no clean fraction hiding in 1.609344, so a UK driver mentally converting a French autoroute distance is always working with an approximation, however good the shortcut.

Worked example — reading a continental distance sign

A French motorway sign reads 100 km to the next services. Dividing by the factor converts it back to the unit a British driver actually thinks in: 100 ÷ 1.609344 = 62.1371, so 100 km is 62.1371 miles — visibly more than the number on the sign, which is exactly the mental trap that catches UK drivers used to reading distance as a smaller figure than the ground actually covers.

Shortcuts, and one you probably haven't seen

The well-known mental shortcut is the ×8÷5 rule (multiply by 8, divide by 5), which trades a little accuracy for arithmetic simple enough to do at speed. A less obvious trick uses the Fibonacci sequence: 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89. Because consecutive Fibonacci numbers divide into a ratio that converges on the golden ratio, roughly 1.618, and the true mile-to-km factor is 1.609344, consecutive Fibonacci numbers approximate a mile-to-km pair almost by coincidence — 5 miles is close to 8 km, 8 miles close to 13 km, 13 miles close to 21 km, and so on up the sequence. The error stays fixed at roughly 0.54%, since it is really the golden ratio standing in for the mile factor rather than a distance-specific approximation, so it holds equally well whether you are estimating 5 miles or 55.

The wider half-metric muddle

Roads are the most visible example, but Britain's stalled metrication left a pattern of exemptions rather than a single holdout. Draught beer and cider must legally be sold in pints, as must milk in returnable glass bottles — both preserved as permanent UK derogations when the rest of packaged retail went metric. Height and body weight are still commonly given in feet-and-inches and stone. Meanwhile a UK driver's own car will show the odometer in miles but the fuel tank capacity in litres, because fuel has been sold by the litre since the 1980s while the distance it takes you to get there stayed in miles — two units from two different eras of the same unfinished programme, sitting on the same dashboard.
